Nuclear Museum

While we explored Albuquerque, our Roadside America App told us about the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History.  We went by to check it out.

The museum is a very large facility and had lots of displays.

These are life size models of "Fat Man" and "Little Boy".  They were the 2 bombs dropped on Japan that ended World War II.

Fat Man

As the scientists were developing the bombs at Los Alamos here in New Mexico, they built a prototype that for security reasons they code named "The Gadget"  This is a model of "The Gadget".

Behind the Museum was a nice display of aircraft that were developed for nuclear weapon delivery.
This is a B-29 similar to the "Enola Gay", the airplane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945.

This is a B-52.  These aircraft are still being flown and are starting to get a little old.  The first model flew in April, 1952.

This is a MK 17 which is the largest nuclear bomb the U.S. actually deployed.  It is really big.  It weighed 41,400 pounds.

We spent several hours reading through all of the displays and thought the museum was definitely worth a visit.

The next day we continued on down the road and we will tell you about that soon.
